Languages Spoken In Spain
Choosing Spain as a tour destination is a great idea and there is actually a lot that you can achieve by taking a tour in Spain. Knowing what to expect will also go a long way into ensuring that you do not get any unpleasant surprises.
Spain is a country that is very diverse. All the regions of Spain operate autonomously and it is therefore no wonder that you may find many different languages spoken in different parts of Spain. These are the little things you should know about so that you do not get confused during your tour.
The universal and official language in Spain is actually Spanish but it gets a little complicated than that. Spanish forms part of the romance language family. Other languages under this category include Romanian, French, Occitan, Italian, Catalan, Galician, and Portuguese. A lot of people especially away from Castile call it Castellano (Castilian).
Other languages spoken in Spain include Austrian, Galician, Basque and Catalan. Some of the languages dominate the areas in which they are spoken. The languages are recognized as co-official alongside Castilian. Galician, Basque and Catalan are official languages according to the Spanish constitution. If you speak Castilian, the other languages will be quite easy to understand. Basque is the only language which has a debated origin while the others are all romance languages.
The trick here is to learn even some of the Spanish words. You will be quickly endeared to the locals if you show some effort of learning the local languages.
Catalan is quite a distinct language. It is very similar to Castilian although it is closer to Oc branch of Romance languages. Many people categorize it under a dialect that spans across Italy Spain and France. When one listens to Catalan, he may think that the language is a cross between French and Castilian. It is however a language by its own but shares the features of both French and Castilian.
Galician is a language that closely relates to Portuguese. It is widely spoken in Galicia and Asturias at the western portion. Galician forms part of the Galician- Portuguese family. Many of the Galicians refer to their language as Spanish.
Basque cannot be connected or related to any other language in Spain or any other part of the world. There are three provinces within the Basque country that speak Basque. The language is unclassified and is what can be called a linguistic isolate. This is because it cannot be categorized under any branch of the language family.

Enjoying the Best of Semana Santa at Malaga
Spain has many holidays stemming from the myriad of festivals celebrated. One of the more popular fiestas celebrated across Spain is the Semana Santa which is a religious festivals that is reverently celebrated by most towns and cities in Andalucia.
Semana Santa refers to the Holy week festival that is celebrated by the Catholics. This fiesta commences from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday; this whole week of celebrations will have numerous processions, dancing, music and performances.
This festival is enjoyed by all who celebrate it religiously although many tourists purposely come to Malaga to observe or participate in its colorful celebrations.
Traditions
Semana Santa begins with Palm Sunday where colorful and joyous processions take place along the city streets every day with religious confradias. Parades of huge floats depicting or re-enacting the holy scene of Jesus and the Virgin Mary would be abundant. These floats are also known as “tronos”; they are heavily and colorfully decorated using candles. There is a band accompanying the parade playing dirge in accordance to the festival’s mood. The tronos might stop briefly to entertain the public with a solemn flamenco song called the “saeta”.
These tronos or parade floats are usually huge pieces that are physically carried by able bodied bearers who wish to identify with Christ’s sufferings. The journey is long and the float is huge and heavy. The sight of the float bearers invokes empathy from all observers regardless of race, faith or religion. Families and friends of these float bearers usually rally around and behind in full support with the provision of food and water when the float pauses during the parade.
Full participation
The religious festival of Semana Santa functions to bind one and all together; the young and old; men and female; all come together to be float bearers with no generation gaps. Many would walk beside the float in a ready position to take over from the tired float bearers. This cooperation among the community binds one and all today to create a strong community in the city.
Children are seen running around the floats to collect dripping candle wax from the floats to form the largest wax balls.
The Semana Santa week is widely and intensely celebrated with vibrant activities compared to other Spanish fiesta celebrations. There may not be much raucous and partying during the Semana Santa as reverence is the key element in this festival. Nevertheless, any participant of Semana Santa would feel totally satisfied at the end of the week.
